Angie Keefer’s OHRHUT is a signal-blocking mobile device case conceived by the artist as an antidote to both social media addiction and relentless data surveillance. Any device placed inside of an OHRHUT instantly disappears from the global grid of always-on networked communications, an effect both faster and more reliable than simply powering down, since even dormant phone batteries may be used to gather their owners' geolocation information. Though publicly proposed as a luxury commodity, OHRHUT aims to address systemic problems of political and economic inequity by way of a vertically-integrated, sustainable manufacturing program.
