Nicolai Carsten

Carsten Nicolai (Karl-Marx-Stadt, Germany, 1965), born in 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, is part of a generation of artists who work intensively in the transitional area between art and science. As a visual artist Nicolai seeks to overcome the separation of science and sensory perception using both sound and light as elements and subjects in his work. His solo exhibitions include Modular Re.struct, Poalo Curti/Annamaria Gambuzzi & Co, Milan (2003); Audio Visual Spaces, Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Gent (2005); Polylit, Kunstmuseum, Stuttgart (2006); and Tired Light, Galerie EIGEN + ART, Berlin (2008). He has participated in many group exhibitions including Documenta 10, Kassel (1997); Still Portraits of the Turning World, 6th International Biennale Santa Fe/New Meixco (2006); 1st Singapore Biennial, Singapore (2006); Space for your Future, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, (2007); Konstellationen II, Staedel Musem, Frankfurt/Main (2007); and the 2nd Moskow Biennale, Moskow, (2007). Under the name Alva Noto, Nicolai has performed at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kunsthaus Graz and the Tate Modern in London. In 2001 he participated in the group exhibition Wild Zone at Witte de With.
