Marianne Brouwer (b. 1942, The Netherlands) is an art historian, curator and writer, with a speciality in contemporary art. She was born in the Netherlands and has lived in Japan and in France, where she obtained her MA in art history at the Sorbonne University, Paris. In the seventies she worked as an art critic and journalist. During the eighties and nineties she has been the curator of sculpture of the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Netherlands. She has curated many major shows, and worked with major international artists like Dan Flavin, Richard Serra, Franz West, Louise Bourgeois and Dan Graham. She has widely published and lectured, participated in international juries and taught at various art institutions. Her travels have always been a major influence in her work. In 1994 she curated the exhibition ‘Heart of Darkness’, dedicated to issues of exile and ‘The Other’ (Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, Netherlands with site-specific installations by Huang Yongping, Chen Zhen, Cai Guo Qiang, Mona Hatoum, a.o.). She was the guest curator of the seminal exhibition ‘Another Long March – Chinese Conceptual Art 1997’, the first comprehensive exhibition of Chinese conceptual and video art outside China (with Chris Driessen, curator Fundament Foundation, Breda, Netherlands, 1997). In 2003 she and Corinne Diserens received the Netherlands’ AICA Award for best exhibition & best oeuvre catalogue for: ‘Dan Graham, Works, 1965-2000′.
